The “miniMarathon” is a 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles).

The Marathon & miniMarathon both start at 7:30am. Wheelchair athletes start at 7:25am.

Main Street and Brook Street in Downtown Louisville.

Preston and Witherspoon Street (near Waterfront Park).


The Finish Line will close at 1:30 pm.

There will be a complimentary shuttle for KDF Marathon/miniMarathon participants from Downtown Louisville to the Kentucky Exposition Center for the Race Expo & Packet Pick-Up.  Below are the shuttle stop locations and times that the shuttles will be running on a continuous loop:

Participants can also drive to KEC and pick up their packets.  Packet pickup is located at the Pavilion (West Wing) at KEC.  Please enter through Gate 4 (Crittenden Drive) or Gate 6 (Preston Highway) for easiest access to parking.  When entering KEC, have special permit in your window to notify gate attendant accordingly.


Our race policy does not allow for refunds or deferrals.

Once you register for a race, you will always have the opportunity to log into RunSignUp and view your registration. Also, before the race takes place, you may be able to edit certain aspects of your registration.

To view and/or edit your registration, begin by logging into your account, and go to your “Profile” page. On the “Profile” page, click the button for “My Registered Races”, and you will be brought to a listing of your race registration history. From here, you can find all of the registrations done through your account, and they will be separated by race, event, event date, and registrant. Next to each registrant, you will be able to click “View/Edit Registration”.

The “View/Edit Registration” page is where you need to go in order to resend the confirmation email, request a refund, transfer into another event, transfer your registration to another participant, create a fundraiser, and create/join a competitive running team.

Runners can transfer race categories within miniMarathon or Marathon along with the  $20.00 transfer  fee, participants can make the change by logging into your Run Sign Up with the user account you used to register.

The following are strictly prohibited on the course:

  • Roller Skates (including in-line skate)
  • Bicycles (including hand crank bicycles)
  • Baby Strollers
  • Running Strollers
  • Animals
  • There will be NO bags allowed on this year’s course. You will have the opportunity to leave all belongings at gear check located at Louisville Slugger Field. Camel Backs & Water Bags will be allowed. 


The minimum age to participate in the Derby Festival Marathon is 16 and the miniMarathon is 12. Runners who are under the age of 18 will have to have a liability waiver signed by their legal guardian at packet pick-up.

All participants must maintain a 13:45 minute per mile pace for the Marathon or a 15:00 minute per mile in the half Marathon (miniMarathon).

The roads will re-open progressively at the 15 minute per mile pace.  The Louisville Metro Police trail car which starts after the last corral crosses the start line (not gun time) will reopen the roads. But Don’t Panic…participants will be allowed to continue the course by moving to the sidewalk and following pedestrian rules for safety.

Please Note; course services will not be available beyond this time. Marathoners that do NOT reach Mile 8 (Churchill Downs Split) by 10:15AM will be deviated to the miniMarathon course at the course officials discretion. All Marathoners must reach the 20 mile Split (3rd & Breckinridge) by 12:50p.m. in order to continue the route with full support. *6 Hour Course Limit for the Marathon

All timing chips are attached to the inside of all race bibs. Chips will be activated by crossing the timing mat at Race Expo and Packet Pick-Up on Thursday, April 28 & Friday, April 29 as well the start line of Saturday, April 30.

Race packets are available (ID REQUIRED) at the Derby Festival Race Expo & Packet Pick-Up at the Kentucky Exposition Center, West Wing. NO PACKET PICKUP ON RACE DAY. Runner packets include race bib, timing chip, safety pins and important runner instructions.

Yes, walkers may participate, but must be able to keep a 13:45 minute per mile pace for the full Marathon or a 15:00 minute per mile pace in the miniMarathon.

No, runners will run on pavement through the infield of Churchill Downs.

While the Kentucky Derby Festival, Inc. does not recommend the use of music devices on the course for safety reasons, we do allow runners to use music devices if they so wish.


Tech Shirts will be available in both male and female cut shirts. Shirts are given based on original ordered size.


Exchanges can be made at T-shirt Exchange booth at the Race Expo & Packet-Pick Up if inventory is available.

Yes, there is a medal engraving available inside Runners Reunite located at Kroger’s Fest-a-ville at Waterfront Park.


Corral Systems are based on previous finishing times or estimated finishing time. Preferred corrals can be requested with following times. Please send proof of finishing time to

Corral assignments will be listed on your race bib. Your number will be followed by a letter A, B, C the letter is your corral assignments.


No…All participants will be required to show a valid photo ID along with their registration confirmation at Packet Distribution.

Each participant is given a goodie bag at packet pick-up and can also be used as a gear check bag. Runner’s Gear can be left with the Runner’s Gear Truck, which will be stationed at the intersection of Preston and Main Streets at the start.  You can pick up your gear at the Runners Reunite area at the finish line located inside Kroger’s Fest-A-Ville on the waterfront.

Race T-shirts are available to pick up at Race Expo and Packet Pick-Up on Thursday, April 26 between 4 pm – 8 pm and on Friday, April 27 between 11 am – 9 pm. Stay tuned for more details.

Yes, Free Live Tracking and Progress Alerts are available on Race Day through RaceJoy mobile App. Make sure to download the App prior to the race. Carry your phone and use RaceJoy to add to your race experience with these features: GPS Progress Alerts, Live GPS Tracking, and Send-A-Cheer.

Parking is available in the following locations:  Witherspoon Parking Garage (1st Street and Witherspoon); Waterside Parking Garage (Brook Street and Washington Street); and other area parking lots.  There will be NO PARKING in the parking lot East of Louisville Slugger Field.  Anyone parking in this location will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Make arrangements to meet your family at the free Runners Reunite located inside Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront (Waterfront Park).

There will be alphabetical signs, so choose a letter and meet there. Look for the letter flags in the lawn.

Race organizers will offer 250 “Charity Bibs” for runners who missed the registration deadline. The bibs – which allow entry into either the Marathon or miniMarathon – cost $125, with the proceeds going to the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, the Derby Festival’s charitable arm. The Charity Bibs will only be available at the Race Expo & Packet Pick-Up, first-come, first-served starting on April 27.


Yes, gel is available along the Marathon route ONLY at following Waterstops; Water #5 (3rd & Central), Waterstop #10 (Haywood Ave.), and Waterstop #13 (Breckinridge & Vine).

We’ll be offering Clif SHOT Energy Gel in Strawberry & Double Espresso with Caffeine.

You will be able to register for the new VIP Experience Presented by ZEGGZ and Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, when you first register to run on RunSignUp.


To add your VIP Experience after you’ve signed up:

  1. Sign In to RunSignUp
  2. Go to your Profile
  3. View your events under Upcoming Events
  4. Click Manage Registration next to the registration that you are editing
  5. Click Add-On Menu
  6. Edit the quantity of the Add-On that you would like
  7. Click Continue
